Zoologist by training, Professor Samuel M. 'Ohukani'ōhi'a Gon III has over thirty years of experience in Hawaiian ecology, including 24 years in the Hawaiian Nature Conservation Program, notably as scientific director of 1992 to 1994, where he used his cultural expertise to optimize the scientific missions of the program. He is also an associate professor in the Department of Urban and Regional Planning at the University of Hawaii. In 2014, he received the title of Living Treasure of Hawaii. He participated in each of the previous editions, he presented on June 30, 2012 a conference entitled Hawai'i Kua Uli, A study of the endemic ecosystems of the Hawai'i Islands at the Museum of Natural History and for the 3rd edition in 2018, he moderated the conference, What a thousand years of sustainable and island practices teach us. At the 4th edition in 2021, he will present a conference on the conservation of Hawaiian biodiversity entitled Biocultural Conservation in Hawai’i, a model of environmental sustainability for the future of our planet.
